The auto insurance Florida requires is far less than a serious crash can cost, and that gap is where people get hurt financially.

One call shows what closing that gap costs across many companies, same day. Asking changes nothing on your current policy.

What the State Requires Is Only the Floor

To register a vehicle with at least four wheels in Florida you must carry:

  • $10,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
  • $10,000 Property Damage Liability (PDL)

That is the requirement as FLHSMV sets it out. PIP pays 80 percent of reasonable expenses for medically necessary services, up to $10,000.

The four-wheel rule reaches a motorhome, which also needs cover for the living space inside, but not a motorcycle, where the rider's injury gap needs its own plan.

What Is Missing From That List Can Land on You

Bodily injury liability. It is not required for standard registration.

Think about what that means. If you cause a crash and another person is seriously injured, a policy written at the state minimum includes no bodily injury liability to respond to their claim, and that claim can come to you personally.

It is worth understanding before you choose limits, because it is easy to miss at the point of sale. Driving for work is a different case, since a vehicle used for business needs commercial auto.

Your Own Injuries: What Pays When PIP Runs Out

PIP covers 80 percent of reasonable medical expenses up to $10,000. Anyone who has seen an emergency room bill knows how quickly that is exhausted. Under s. 627.736, initial services and care must be received within 14 days after the accident, a deadline worth knowing.

When the at-fault driver has no bodily injury coverage, the coverage that pays your remaining bills is uninsured motorist coverage on your own policy. That is the practical reason it matters, and how it picks up where PIP stops is set out in its own guide.

Crashes in Marion County and What They Mean for Your Limits

Marion County recorded 6,532 crashes in 2024 with 114 deaths and 4,959 injuries, according to the FLHSMV Traffic Crash Facts, 2024 annual report.

Rural highway crashes at speed are the kind that cause serious injury, and serious injury is exactly the scenario a minimum-limits policy does not address.

See the Steps Up Quoted Both Ways, Then Decide

Liability limits are usually written as three numbers, for example 100/300/50: $100,000 per injured person, $300,000 per accident, $50,000 property damage.

No prices appear on this page, because a premium depends on your drivers, vehicles, record and ZIP. What is worth knowing is how much the step from minimum limits to a meaningful bodily injury limit actually changes your premium. Ask to see the quote both ways, ideally from an agency that can show it across many companies, and judge it yourself. A household with a home or savings to protect may also want a personal umbrella on top of those limits.

Filings Change the Requirement

After a DUI conviction, Florida requires bodily injury liability of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per crash plus $50,000 property damage, carried for a minimum of 3 years from reinstatement. That filing is known as an FR-44. An SR-22 is an insurance filing certifying bodily injury and property damage liability to comply with reinstatement requirements; the state's reinstatement notice tells you whether you need one. The side-by-side of both filings shows the limits each one demands, and finding a company that will file an SR-22 for you comes next.

Questions

Is bodily injury liability really optional in Florida?

It is not required for standard registration, so a car can be registered without it. It is required after a DUI conviction (the FR-44 limits above).

If I am hit by an uninsured driver, who pays?

Your PIP, then your uninsured motorist coverage if you carry it. If you do not, you are pursuing an individual who by definition had no coverage.

Does PIP cover my passengers?

PIP coverage generally extends to certain people under the policy's terms. The specifics depend on the policy and the relationship.

What are stacked and unstacked limits?

Stacked uninsured motorist coverage adds the coverage on two or more vehicles together; non-stacking does not. In Florida, non-stacking must be accepted on an approved form and must carry an uninsured motorist premium reduction of at least 20 percent. It is worth understanding rather than defaulting. See the uninsured motorist guide.

Is a minimum-limits policy ever the right answer?

Sometimes, and it should still be a decision. The cheap car section of the auto page sets out exactly what those limits buy.

How do I find out what raising my limits costs?

Send your declarations page and you will get the comparison both ways.
