Personal Property
Your belongings, on or off the premises. Furniture, clothes, electronics, tools, the bike in the hallway. Off-premises coverage is the part people forget: a laptop stolen from a car is generally a renters claim, not an auto claim.
Liability
If a guest is injured in your unit, or you cause damage to the building or a neighboring unit, this is the coverage that responds, typically including the cost of defending you. On most policies it is the most valuable part and the least thought about. It has a ceiling, so check where household liability stops, and know that a personal umbrella can sit on top of renters liability.
Loss of Use
If the unit becomes uninhabitable after a covered loss, this pays for somewhere to live while it is repaired. Hotel rooms are expensive and this limit is real money.
Medical Payments
Small no-fault medical costs for a guest injured in your home, designed to settle minor incidents before they become liability claims.
