A bad RV policy usually insures only one of those, and on a unit parked more months than it is driven, that can decide whether a claim gets paid.

Asking changes nothing on your current policy.

Pay for What Your Kind of RV Actually Needs

Motorhomes

Class A, B and C units drive under their own power, so they need auto liability like any vehicle, plus contents and attached-equipment coverage like a home.

Travel Trailers and Fifth Wheels

Towed, so liability generally follows the tow vehicle while in motion, but the trailer needs its own physical damage coverage and its own liability while parked and in use. That parked-and-in-use gap is the one people miss.

Full-Time Living

If the RV is your primary residence, a standard recreational policy is the wrong form. Full-timer coverage adds the personal liability and contents protection a homeowners policy would otherwise provide, so tell the carrier if you live in it.

What an RV Policy Should Carry So a Claim Is Not a Surprise

  • Liability: for motorhomes, and for trailers in use
  • Comprehensive and collision: including hail and falling limbs, the kind of damage parked units typically see
  • Contents: everything inside, which adds up faster than owners expect
  • Attached accessories: awnings, satellite gear, solar, racks
  • Emergency expense: somewhere to sleep when the unit is disabled far from home
  • Roadside assistance: sized for a vehicle a normal tow truck cannot take
  • Vacation liability: liability while parked and set up at a site
  • Storage or lay-up terms: reduced coverage while it sits, which lowers cost if handled properly; a motorcycle laid up for the off months can sometimes work the same way

Total Loss Terms

Purchase price replacement and agreed value options both exist on some RV policies, and the difference at total loss is large on a depreciating unit. On a newer motorhome this is usually the most consequential option on the quote.

Storage Is Where an RV Policy Earns Its Keep

If your RV sits on a pad beside the house or in a storage lot for most of the year, two things follow.

First, a stored unit is exposed to hail, wind and falling limbs, not collisions, which changes which coverage is doing the work. Dropping comprehensive to save money on a stored unit removes precisely the protection it needs. A boat on a lift raises the same question, which is why a boat policy reads storage closely too.

Second, if the RV sits on your property, do not assume the policy on the house beside it covers it. A homeowners policy generally does not cover a licensed recreational vehicle the way it covers a shed, so check before relying on it.

Hurricane Season: Read the Storm Terms Before You Need Them

A stored RV is a wind loss waiting to happen, and named-storm terms vary by carrier. If the plan is to drive it out of the path, say so, because coverage while evacuating and coverage while parked are not always the same conversation. Rising water around a parked unit is usually a comprehensive question on the RV policy, not something the flood policy on a house pays.

Know What Moves Your RV Rate Before You Compare

Class and value carry most of it. After that: your driving record, how many months a year it is used, whether it is your primary residence, where it is stored, and the mileage you actually put on it. Full-time use changes the form, and it is not something to leave off the application.

RV Insurance Questions

Does my auto policy cover my travel trailer?

Liability usually extends while towing. Physical damage to the trailer itself, and liability while it is parked and occupied, generally do not. That is the gap a trailer policy fills.

Do I need insurance on a trailer I only use a few times a year?

For physical damage, that is a judgment call about what a replacement would cost you. For liability while it is set up and occupied, it is worth carrying regardless.

Can I reduce coverage while it is stored?

Usually yes, through lay-up or storage terms. Keep comprehensive in place: storage is when hail and limbs do their work.

I live in mine full time. Is that a problem?

Not at all, but it must be disclosed so the right form is used. Full-timer coverage exists precisely for this and replaces protection a homeowners policy would otherwise give you.

Does it cover my belongings inside?

Contents coverage does, up to the limit selected. Value what is actually in there, including tools and outdoor gear, because the default limit is often light.

Can you quote the RV and the tow vehicle together?

Yes, and they should be looked at together, since the tow vehicle's own liability is what follows a trailer on the road. An umbrella above both is worth pricing at the same time.
